How can you bring out the best in others if you don’t start by using the best in yourself? And how can you leverage the best in yourself without self-knowledge?
Do you know your “natural†personality? I’ve been using PREP Personal Strengths Profiles with clients for 20 years or more. Why? Because my busy clients love the ease of completing the five to ten minute questionnaire and are surprised by how much information it reveals. More importantly, they’re amazed by the accuracy of the reporting. I hear comments like, “This feels like me,†“This nailed me!†and "This is 100% me!â€
What will a PREP Personal Strengths Profile tell you? It will tell you if you prefer to lead from the front or from a supportive role, if you’re energized by people or drained by too much interaction, if you’re best with details or with the big picture and if you’re laid back or in a perpetual rush to act. You might already know (or intuit) some of these answers, but it will also help you understand how you can use your preferences to be more effective and to work with people whose preferences differ from yours. Ideally, you’ll recognize that your way is one right way, but it’s not the only right way, that people with different ways of being can complement each other to work more effectively together.
What else will PREP tell you? It will identify your communications style. Do you like to “cut to the chase,†or do you prefer to communicate more personally? When you understand these differing communication styles, their strengths and weaknesses, you’ll learn to recognize your colleagues’ preferred styles. A better understanding of your style and theirs will allow you to work together more effectively.
Are you a systematic problem-solver or an innovative problem-solver? Again, understanding the differences and the values that each brings to the table will help you lead more effectively and achieve better results together.
