Imagine what the world would be like if...

...everyone were working on purpose. You're probably working to support yourself, maybe to support your family. Are you also working to make a difference, to make the world a better place?

Wait, this isn't (just) about altruism!

You don't have to be altruistic or work for a non-profit to work on purpose. If you're working on purpose, you're using your Highest Talents™, you're making a difference, you're making the world a better place and you're contributing to your own best life!

You can build homes for the pure joy of starting with a vacant lot and working with heavy equipment, raw products and a team of artisans to create homes of beauty. You can litigate disputes for the satisfaction of using logic and persuasion to win cases. Maybe your satisfaction comes from serving your clients. Maybe it comes from your legal wins. If you're an accountant, maybe it comes from making all of the numbers and formulas fit. What is it about your work that gives you joy and satisfaction? That's how you're fulfilling your purpose!

Has your passion faded?

If so, renew it by remembering and focusing on your purpose. Start by evaluating the work you're doing. What work gives you joy? How much time are you spending on it? How much time are you spending on work you don't enjoy? How much of the work you dislike can you give away or delegate? Remember, what's drudgery to you is work someone else likes or needs to learn for their own growth. Do you have clients who drain your energy? Can you refer them to someone who's better suited to work with them? Or just say no? Now that you've cleared away work and clients you don't enjoy or, worse, that drain your energy, focus on the work you love. When you do work you love, you're working on purpose, everyone wins and the world is a better place.

Relish your accomplishments.

Take a moment at the end of each day to remember why you work. Ahhhhh....a day well spent.

Note to leaders...

Helping the people who work for you connect with their purpose, jointly and individually, is one of the most powerful ways you can build commitment, productivity, engagement and retention.
