My core values are Family, Respect, Adventure, Service and Beauty, not necessarily in that order. Why does that matter? Clarity about my core values helps me make decisions that allow me to fulfill my purpose and enjoy my life. It contributes to my professional success and personal happiness. Like many, I love and value my family above all. I have three grown children and four grandchildren. I’m fortunate to live near my oldest son and two of my grandchildren, so I see them often. While not physically close to my younger son, daughter and two of my grandchildren, I see them a few times a year and stay in close communication. In the words of John Medina, author of Brain Rules, I hang onto my loved ones for dear life. Admittedly, I didn’t need to complete a core values exercise to identify Family as one of my core values.

Shouldn’t you and your colleagues enjoy your work? Do you want to work in an environment where people are engaged, continuing to learn and producing excellent work for great clients or do you want to work in an environment where people are discouraged, no longer enjoy their work or their clients and perhaps actively undermine each other? Presumably we’d all prefer the former. That’s the first and most obvious reason for creating a Great Place to Work.
That's one of two memorable life lessons I learned from my racecar driving instructor. I learned many lessons that made me a better (and safer) driver, but this is one of two lessons I've applied to life. The instructor told my small class of eight drivers to stop looking at the pavement immediately in front of our cars, to lift our eyes and look into the turns, because where your eyes lead, your car will follow.
